"How Professional Coaches Can Change The World...
(while having fun and making a great living)!"
As Professional Coaches, most of us (if not all of us) got into this work because we enjoy helping others. We want to make a difference in people's lives and in the world at large (or at least some part of it).
But, what usually happens is pretty sad. We get caught up in our own stuff. Fears about being good enough, being able to make enough impact for the money we charge, taking money at all for doing something we love, and of course the dreaded marketing! We get caught up in this stuff and we let it paralyze us, or perhaps just slow us down. Because of our own stuff we lose sight of the people we want to serve and the difference that we want to make in the world.
If you're ready to get back into action and make your mark on the world, then follow the 7 simple steps below (yes they are "simple", but that doesn't mean they're easy).
1) The Fire: Get in touch with that part of you that wants to make a difference. There's a part of you that wants something more for yourself, for your family & friends, but also for the whole world (or a large group of people). Take a moment right now to listen to it. What does it want?
2) The Eco-System: Know that you can and already do make a difference. Often times we think that we can't change the world. It's too big or too messed up to make a difference. But, that's not true at all. There is a principle in physics that applies to humanity as well. "Everything that enters a system effects the system". Every idea you inject into the lives of your clients and potential clients touches them even if they don't outright act on it, they can't help but have it working on their subconscious mind where it ultimately effects their behavior in ways that we may not be able to measure, or expect. That's why even your marketing material can start the coaching process.
"Something as simple as a butterfly flapping it's wings may cause a tsunami on the other side of the world."
3) The Spirit: Find an area of focus that you most what to help out in. You could certainly do charity work, but I'm suggesting something bigger. What are conditions that are present in the world that need some type of fix? Want to help world peace? Help people create peace on the inside. Find a cause to rally behind. Here are some examples: "putting an end to crappy relationships", "eliminating loneliness", "enabling anyone that wants to live the *new* American dream of business ownership", "everyone can have boundless energy", "Americans live time abundant lives", etc. This is a lot like finding a niche, but with a niche' the focus is on you and your business. There's nothing wrong with this, but it's very limiting. Instead expand by getting behind a cause. Then you're not just growing your business, you're changing the world too! This becomes what I call "cause marketing". Where is your spirit calling you to jump in?
4) The Primal Urge: Discover what really drives the group of people you want to serve. What are the biggest challenges they're dealing with? Can you see it from their shoes? This is one of the reasons why many coaches hate marketing. They usually skip over this step. They create a program or product that seems like it serves the people they want to help, but people aren't jumping on it and they wonder why. When you really understand the group of people you want to help, they'll be hungry for what you have to offer. That is of course if you...
5) Soap Box It: Communicate in a way that creates interest, excitement, and action! There's so much to learn about how to connect to people in this way. The biggest tip I can give on this is to stop focusing on yourself and focus 90% on the people and problems you solve. Instead of talking about how you help people "create life balance", talk about how you "put an end to the problem of being pulled in too many directions that many working parents face these days." What does your "cause group" need to hear? [Mark there needs to be a term for the group of people. I'm not sure if it's cause group, tribe, spirit group, etc.]
6) The Peace Pipe: One of the great things about changing the world is that your competitors in business become your allies in your cause! For example, if my cause is to "get people coached", meaning I take a stand for helping get more people experiencing the power of coaching. Then, even though I have a program that helps coaches resolve all the issues stopping them from getting clients, the 100 other people that do this too, are no longer my competitors, they're my allies. Why? Because whether they know it or not, they help my cause of getting people coached. With this new common ground, there's no limit to what we can do.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
7) The Circle Of Life: Understand that it's not only OK, but a wonderful thing if you can make a great living while changing the world. Many of the things that change the world the most are income producers, like automobiles, airplanes, and cell phones. These inventions have changed the world in incredible ways and so can you. As you coach, train, teach, and even when you perform sales & marketing, you can be making a difference in the world AND earning a great income. Making money doing what you love & at the same time making a significant contribution to the world is a magical thing! More importantly making great money feeds and renews us, completing the circle of life and creating sustainability for the long run.
